Legend and reality in the phrase “Not even the Chinese doctor can save him”

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Among the first coolie Chinese who arrived to Cuba, there were doctors who were, in general, herbal medicine practitioners.
Objective: presenting the origin and history of a popular phrase that is deep-rooted in Cubans’ social and cultural environment and which arose from the XIX century Chinese doctors’ work and still remains in the popular vocabulary.
Methods: A phenomenological qualitative research is presented. Theoretical methods such as documentary review, historical logical analysis, synthesis, systematization and triangulation were used.
Results: Results made possible to recognize that the fame of Doctor Cham Bombiá’s work gave rise to the phrase in Havana and the use of the expression was strengthen by the successful work of other XIX century Chinese doctors in the country.
Conclusions: The origin of the phrase in the Canaries as well as the Cuban history behind the legend, were traced. Cubans kept saying the phrase as a way of recognizing the success of Chinese doctors’ scientific and human work in Cuba from the XIX century to nowadays, as part of Cuban culture and society.
