ABSTRACT

Sixty-nine adolescents (age x = 16.8 ± 1.4 years), from a public high school, completed a questionnaire to gather demographic information, knowledge about food classification and characteristics of a correct diet as well as nutrition practices, and a scale proposed by Evers C. to identify risk for anorexia. More adolescents (69%) were able to recognize food of the same type (ei: fruit-fruit); than to classify them into food groups (fruit-vegetable) (35%) or distinguish between groups (animal product- cereal) (48%). Less than one third consumed a varied diet every day (including all food groups at each meal); cereals and animal products were the most included while fruits and vegetables were included only by 30% of the participants. Men usually made three meals a day, while women made only two (p=0.001), dinner was the meal they more often skipped. 10% had a score suggesting a risk for anorexia. These results show a need for an effort to bring comprehensive nutrition education interventions to this population.
