ABSTRACT

The advances in pediatric cardiology and cardiac surgery have allowed that more than the 85 % of children with congenital heart diseases survive until adulthood; half of this population is women of reproductive age. Pregnancy in these patients constitutes a new medical and social challenge. Cardiac disease in the pregnant woman implies not only a risk to mother's life but can also produce adverse effects in the fetal growth, development, and survival. Medical care of the cardiac patient is one of the main challenges in our health system; it is of great importance to take care of these patients in a consultation of preconception risk in order to control their disease before pregnancy, receive a multidisciplinary care and mitigate future complications; all this would improve maternal and perinatal results.
