ABSTRACT

Introduction: Goiter disease is defined as the thyroid gland overgrowth and the World Health Organization (WHO) has clasiffied it in three levels. Worlwide euthyroid goiter is the more frecuent presentation in children.
Objective: To know our frecuency of goiter disease at the Hospital Infantil del Estado de Sonora trying to define a clinical base criteria, anatomic and functional as well for the different types of goiter and their possible origins.
Material and Methods: We have revised 115 clinical records with the diagnosis of goiter disease, the following variable were included: age, sex, added symptoms, goiter level in the time of diagnosis, performed studies and final diagnosis.
Results: Of the 115 cases revised, 80% corresponded to females, being predominant in adolescents and 86% were asyntomatic at the time of their diagnosis, also the thyroid growth was the disease indicator. Clinical degree more frecuent were the third and second degree levels. Ecosonogram (71%) and thyroid function studios (100%), where the most frecuent used diagnostic methods.
Conclusions: Eutyroid goiter continues to be the most frecuent pathology in children, mainly in female adoles-cents. Thyroid function test and sonogram allow us the have a precise orientation regarding the origin of goiter and the necessity of complementing with another clinical studies.
