ABSTRACT

Background. Yellow nail syndrome is a rare disease of unknown etiology in which it's found the triad, yellow nails, primary lymphedema and respiratory manifestations. In it's pathogenesis there is an impairment of lymphatic drainage; it has been associated with autoimmune diseases, malignant diseases of the breast, larynx, endometrium; rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, associated with drugs and tuberculosis.
Clinical case. Male asymptomatic in the pleuropulmonary area that began with edema of the lower limbs, subsequently, changes in the nails and accidentally discovered he had pleural effusion. Underwent pleurocentesis, antibiotic therapy and vitamin E.
Discussion. The lymphedema, pathology undervalued by be irreversible as we know, has a dissapointing medical, surgical and rehabilitatory treatment, especially to these rare syndromes that may be accompanied by high morbidity and mortality. The management of this syndrome is symptomatic.
