ABSTRACT
The cervical lymphoepithelial cyst is a developmental abnormality of the branchial apparatus; the most frequent one occurs on the second arc. Located in the pharyngeal wall, its occurrence is very rare; therefore, the differential diagnosis should include benign and malignant tumor lesions in the wall of the pharynx. Treatment is complete surgical excision via external cervical cyst to prevent recurrence of the injury. We report the case of a cervical lymphoepithelial cyst of three months of evolution, diagnosed in a six-year-old boy. The lesion presented as an asymptomatic mass of approximately four centimeters in diameter located under the skin in front of the middle third of the sternocleidomastoid muscle, attached to the deeper planes, fluctuating, with no clinical evidence of secretions. Preoperative diagnosis was based on the study of a computerized axial tomography and fine-needle aspiration cytology. We review the literature regarding histogenesis, clinical and histological aspects and possibilities of malignant cystic epithelium.
