ABSTRACT

Introduction: hemorrhages is one of the main causes of maternal mortality, both in low incoming countries and in the developed ones.
Objective: to expose the experience with the surgical interventions applied in the emergency treatment of the obstetric hemorrhages.
Method: a descriptive, retrospective trial applied to 51 patients who needed surgical treatment in emergency way to control the obstetric hemorrhages; from January 1988 to February 2017 at the General hospital "Ciro Redondo Garcia", in Artemisa, Cuba.
Results: the average in operated patients was 27 years of age. Caesarean operation was the most frequent type of delivery that preceded the hemorrhage event. The main causes of hemorrhages were uterine atony and vaginal and cervix lacerations. The most used surgical intervention was the total hysterectomy associated with the ligature of the hypogastric arteries. Conservative surgical techniques were applied to patients with uterine atony. There was only one maternal death.
Conclusions: The surgical technique most used for the obstetric hemorrhages treatment was the total hysterectomy associated to the ligature of hypogastric arteries, nevertheless it was possible to conserve the uterus applying conservative surgical techniques, witch should be applied with more frequency, when the patient's clinical circumstances allow them.
