ABSTRACT

Polyneuropathy of critical patient is a serious complication in hospitalized patients at the Intensive Care Unit. This pathology prolongs the withdrawal of mechanical ventilation and maintain muscle weakness. Various risk factors are involved on its development, including sepsis, muscle relaxants, steroids, hyperglycemia, and other factors which are responsible for the pathogenesis of critical patient polyneuropathy. The presence of this complication in critically ill patients implies an increase in morbidity and mortality, reason why it requires a proper identification of neuromuscular impairments in these patients; as well as proceeds through appropriate interventions to improve prognosis and limit disease progression.
