ABSTRACT

Introduction: there are two types of empty sella: primary and secondary, denominated arachnoidocele intraselar, term proposed in 1951. Cases have been reported worldwide with a variable incidence, which has no records in the province of Santiago de Cuba, motivated the investigation by the frequency of the finding. Objectives: to determine the incidence and characterize the study universe. Methods: a retrospective observational longitudinal study was carried out to determine the incidence of primary arachnoidocele intraselar in the province of Santiago de Cuba in 2016; the universe was made up of the 1613 medical indications of the patients who underwent skull MRI and pituitary gland and we worked with a sample of 136 reports diagnosed with primary arachnoid-paralysis. To achieve the objective, precise data were obtained in the indications and reports in adults from 20 years of age, sex (female and male), race (white and black, half-breed), personal pathological background and diagnosis prior to the study. Results: the arachnoidocele intraselar predominated in the female sex in 96.3% between 30-39 years and of half-breed race in 89.7%. The predominant pathological antecedent was hypertension associated with demyelinating diseases as a clinical suspicion. Conclusions: the primary arachnoid is a radiological concept, reflecting an anatomical detail, which does not represent a disease in itself and that has a high incidence in women without significant pathological history and studies are indicated for different reasons.
