ABSTRACT

Introduction: percutaneous technique of renal biopsy in clinical practice represents an irreplaceable method of study for renal diseases, which has contributed to its anatomical and clinical classification, deepening in the mechanisms of its etiology and pathogenesis, as well as to the scientific analysis of the therapeutic protocols. It provides diagnostic information, prognosis and, sometimes, the effectiveness of the treatment.
Clinical case: a 55-year-old mixed-race female patient with a history of hypertension, diabetes mellitus type 2, both controlled with diet for five years, and with a history of thrombophlebitis in the left lower limb, for which the patient was treated with multiple antimicrobials, resolving this condition one week after the last treatment, she attended the service due to nausea, shortness of breath, increased volume in both lower limbs and urine, missing the results.
Conclusions: the presentation of the case highlights the importance of percutaneous renal biopsy in the diagnostic and therapeutic management of patients with kidney disease. The patient had a marked improvement in renal function and of her quality of life; in addition, it contributed to a saving of material resources used in the renal replacement therapy (hemodialysis), since the patient had a regression of her chronic kidney disease, not continuing in the hemodialysis schedule.
