ABSTRACT

Background: Avicenna's work has an extraordinary richness to study the links between history, art and medicine, propitious for the development of a comprehensive general culture in the future health professionals.
Objective: to present the links between history, art and medicine in the work of Avicenna as a study material in medical education.
Methods: a documentary research was carried out in Villa Clara University of Medical Sciences, from January to April 2017. Theoretical methods were used: analysis-synthesis, induction-deduction and the historical-logical; and empirical ones: the documentary review, the observation of images of artistic reproductions and the literary analysis of texts, which facilitated the synthesis of information and reaching conclusions from various sources.
Results: Avicenna's personality has been the subject of study by various authors; his genius allowed him to venture into art, philosophy and medicine. An adequate selection of his works allows teachers to link their students with the history of ancient medicine, motivate their classes, exemplify through them the use of medical procedures in which the importance of the doctor-patient relationship prevails and they offer the possibility of consolidating moral values.
Conclusions: this research work allowed systematizing the knowledge of diverse bibliographical sources to demonstrate the links between history, art and medicine in the work of Avicenna, susceptible of being exploited for the achievement of a comprehensive general culture of the medical sciences students.
