ABSTRACT

Introduction: Of all the deleterious effects of alcohol consumption, peripheral neuropathy is the most common; it is estimated that alcoholic neuropathy is present in 25 to 66% of cases defined as chronic alcoholics. Clinical case: A 49-year-old male, who for five years presented different clinical manifestations of peripheral neuropathy in all four limbs; with normal laboratory studies except for a decrease in the thiamine levels. The last time the patient showed hypoesthesia in a glove and sock distribution, as well as decrease in latencies and amplitude of sensory nerve conduction velocities. Conclusion: Alcoholic neuropathy is under-diagnosed for being insidious in most cases and the patient denial of alcohol abuse.
