An educational intervention on prostate cancer in masculine population among 40-60 years

ABSTRACT

Background: prostate cancer is a world sanitary problem of utmost importance, for it constitutes the most common neoplasia in men. Prostate cancer is the second most frequent neoplasia in males for incidence and the fifth by cause of death worldwide. It is estimated that more than 1,1 millions are new cases and about 300 000 deaths take place per year.
Objective: to modify the level of knowledge on prostate cancer.
Methods: an educational intervention was conducted on prostate cancer. The universe of study was composed by 54 patients from 40 to 60 years from clinic 4 in health center Nguyen Van Troi in Guáimaro, from May to July 2015. The sample of 39 patients that was chosen in a non-probabilistic and intentional way among people who consented to participate, an educational intervention organized in three stages was applied. The information was obtained through a questionnaire that was applied before and after the intervention.
Results: it was found that before applying the educational intervention insufficient knowledge on risk factors, clinical manifestations, diagnosis, and preventive measures prevailed.
Conclusions: the educational intervention modified the participants' level of knowledge favorably demonstrating its effectiveness.
