ABSTRACT

Introduction: The potential benefits of laparoscopic surgery come with some inconveniences such as hernias through the umbilical port-site. In the following study we report the incidence of this pathology in a group of post-cholecystectomy patients. Material and methods: This is a retrospective study in which all cases of umbilical hernias with a history of laparoscopic cholecystectomy are reviewed over a period of five years, identifying demographic data, risk factors, time of onset, treatment and recurrence. Results: A total of 5,774 laparoscopic cholecystectomies were performed during the study period with an incidence of umbilical hernias of 1.48%, corresponding to 86 cases. Fifty-two patients (60.5%) had risk factors, being obesity: 36 patients (69.2%) the factor with the highest prevalence. Surgical repair with prosthetic mesh was performed in 74.4% (64 patients) and 25.6% (22 patients) underwent tissue repair with a recurrence of 4.7% (4 cases). Conclusions: The incidence of laparoscopic port-site incisional umbilical hernia in post-cholecystectomy patients in our setting was 1.48% over a period of five years.
