ABSTRACT
Objective. To evaluate the prevalence of bacterial contamination of solutions for intravenous infusion in hospitalized sick children, and to study the presence of these microbial pathogens in their blood; also were investigated some factors that could be implicated in this problem.
Material and methods. In 295 children to those who were infused intravenous solutions were taken samples of blood and from the solutions for cultivation of bacterias.
Results. The outcome of the bacterial cultivation in the samples obtained in the solutions, were negative; for this reason there was not any case of intrinsic bacteremia. With regard to the factors that could be implied in the bacteremia, the presence of fever showed significant differences (p ‹ 0.05) in regard to the intravascular device used for the infusion, the catheter material and the area where the children were in the ward. The sepsis, in some children, also gave significant differences.
Conclusions. The study allows to suppose that the preparation and bandling of intravenous solutions is correct, but it should be insisted in the hygienic measures for its preparation and infusion.
