ABSTRACT

Background: onycholysis is the separation of the nail plate from the underlying nail bed caused by disruption of the onychocorneal band.
Objetives: determine clinical and apidemiological data of onycholysis caused by fungi and the etiological agents. Methodology: observational, descriptive, retrospective and cross-sectional study in patients with diagnosis of onycholysis studied in the Mycology Section at Dr. Manuel Gea González General Hospital, from September 1994 to June 2017.
Results: 65 patients with clinical diagnosis of onycholysis were included. The diagnosis of fungal agents was confirmed by direct examination with koh-black chlorazol and Sabouraud agar in 30 patients (46%). Women were affected in 83% and toenails were involved in 57%. Candida spp. was the most common agent.
Conclusions: mycotic onycholysis is caused by secondary colonizer fungi, and the most common etiological causative agent is Candida spp.
