Mycoplasma pneumoniae and respiratory disease in children and adolescents

ABSTRACT

Introduction: the respiratory infections in human beings caused by Mycoplasma pneumoniae are infectious events with high incidence rates at international event, mainly in the infant-juvenile population.
Objective: to determine the role of Mycoplasma pneumoniae as causative agent of respiratory disease in children and adolescents.
Method: prospective, descriptive and cross-sectional study conducted in 224 patients aged one month to 15 years; 120 of them had coqueluch syndrome and 74 interstitial pneumonia. All of them had been admitt4d to the pneumology ward of "Juan Manuel Marquez" pediatric hospital. It also included 30 asthma patient, 15 with uncontrolled asthma and 15 with controlled one from the specialized the specialized service of asthma in the same hospital. Several variables were studied, namely type of respiratory disease, age, infectious agent and treatment. The polymerase chain reaction allowed identifying Mycoplasma pneumoniae.
Results: Mycoplasma pneumoniae was found in 31 patients with cokeluch syndrome (25.8 %), in 17 with interstitial pneumonia (23 %) and 9 asthmatic children with criterium of uncontrolled asthma (60 %). In the study group, 89.1 % of children with cokeluch syndrome and 71.6 % with interstitial pneumonia were under 6 years of age.
Conclusions: Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection is related to poor control of asthma and is pretty common in children aged less than 6 years.
