ABSTRACT
Objective. To estimate prevalence of undernutrition and obesity in adolescents from a suburb of Mexico City and to analyze the relationship of the socioeconomic status and familiar structure with the nutritional status of them.
Material and methods. A sample of 303 students attended in secondary school of a suburb were studied. Stunting, risk of stunting, low weight, muscular depletion, fat depletion, overweight and obesity were diagnosed using anthropometric measurements. The socioeconomic status and the familiar characteristics of the adolescents were investigated: migration, “domestic cycle”, family size, siblings number, and birth order were taken in the survey.
Results. The frequency rate of the nutritional indicators studied were: 5.9% stunting, 2.6% low weight, 8.3% muscular depletion, 10.2% fat depletion, 29.4% overweight and 7.6% obesity. Socioeconomic status was associated negatively with risk of stunting and fat depletion, and positively with overweight and obesity. The children of migrants had greater probability of stunting and muscular depletion. The homes in formation had greater risk for de children for low weight and muscular depletion. The family size was associated positively with risk of stunting, but negatively with muscular depletion. The first-borns children had a greater risk of overweight and obesity.
