Results in the primary level of a scale to evaluate suicide risk in elderly adults

ABSTRACT

Introduction: according to the World Health Organization, suicide is currently a public health problem worldwide, considered as a risk group for people over 60 years of age. Objective: to describe the results of the use of the Scale to evaluate the Suicide Risk Attitude Level applied to patients at risk in the health areas of the Manzanillo Polyclinics. Method: A descriptive study was carried out; the results of the application are presented in several moments of the scale. The population was of 2134 adults classified as risk in the Family Health Stories of the Family Physician Offices of Polyclinics I and II of Manzanillo, province of Granma, in the period of time of 2011-2015. A random sample of 956 (44.79%) was selected. Results: in both Polyclinics I and II the female sex predominated, most of the participants had some level of risk attitude, in Polyclinic I in the medium level category the (50.70%) and high level was placed (27.37%) and in the Polyclinic II, in terms of the level of risk attitude for suicide attempts, the majority of older adults with medium risk (62.96%) were classified. Conclusion: it was possible to show the usefulness of the scale and ensure that the method used allowed to classify the type of risk and therefore guide the behavior of the professional in the sector (psychologists, social rehabilitators, psychiatrists, nurses, family doctors and others).
