ABSTRACT

Objective. To know the frequency and severity of infections of syncytial respiratory virus (SRV), in children hospitalized by acute respiratory disease, on the winter seasons.
Material and methods. The frequency of children hospitalized for pneumonia or bronquiolitis in three consecutive winter seasons: since October to March, in the years 1999 to 2002, was taken from the hospital records. Used an immunofluorecence kit it was investigated the virus implied in the infection these children.
Results. The frequency of hospitalized children was similar in the first two winters: n = 51 in 1999-2000 and n = 50 in 2000-2001, but increase to 159 in 2001-2002; of these last one 47.2% were positive to die SRV and 88% had bronchiolitis.
Conclusion. It seems that in the winter 2001-2002 the population suffer an epidemic peak of SRV. Contrary to other winters (in that had only been observed in smaller in infants); besides, there were some children up to one year of age that suffered SRV.
