ABSTRACT

Objective. To study the perinatal and clinical features of jaundice neonates admitted to neonatal area of a general hospital.
Methods. The design of the study is an observational, descriptive, retrospective one; data are related to the clinical features of 40 jaundice newborns attended in the neonatal area throughout two years. Results. All were breast feeding; 22 of them had fever at admission: 9/17 at age between 0-3 days and 13/23 at age between › 4 days. The serum bilirubin concentration was highest: in the group of age › 4 days (21.9 mg/dL). The diagnosis of sepsis was done in 8/40; 5 of them in the age group of › 4 days of life. Kernicterus was diagnosed in 1/20 patients. There was not statistical differences for the variables studied among two groups of age: 0-3 days and 4 and up days.
Conclusions. The knowledge of the clinical features of the patients with jaundice diagnosis will allow to improve the management of this neonates: doing early detection of the cases and opportune treatment of them.
