ABSTRACT

Introduction: the dramatic description of the unhealthy situation that Cuban people lived before the revolutionary triumph and the subsequent evolution of health inspired the idea of Commander Fidel Castro, of creating a different doctor and a new specialist who would help achieving better status of health and increase the level of satisfaction for the population.
Objective: to describe the role of Fidel Castro as the founder of community medicine in Cuba, its impact and perspectives.
Methods: a study based on the materialist-dialectical method was developed due to its capacity to integrate the qualitative and quantitative and to determine the system of methods. Theoretical and empirical methods were applied. Among the first: historical-logical, analysis-synthesis and on the second one: induction-deduction; as well as the documentary review.
Development: Cuban Public Health System has the privilege of counting on a Centennial Generation, led by Fidel and succeeded by Raúl, in terms of dedication, example, solidarity and eagerness to seek and resolve the causes of problems. Today it has the new generations of health workers who follow their teachings for the development of health system and well-being of citizens, not only in Cuba, but also all over the world, as manifested in solidarity grants, missions and collaborations in other countries, the development of health research and academic training.
Conclusions: Fidel Castro developed the creation of the family doctors, whose foundation was a devotion in order to assist the sick people and to promote health using preventive medicine, setting the standard in the historical evolution of world public health; this perspective supports the doctrine that a better world is possible.
