Mortality for accidents, fallen in children.

ABSTRACT

Objective. To describe the associated variables to fatal fallen accidents in children in the Sonora State of Mexico.
Material and methods. Data was gathered retrospectively, between 1974 and 1999 from 152 journalistic reports in regional circulation newspapers about accidents for fall, in children. The information obtained in 34 which died in the place of the accident came from the police files. Death was classified according to the international classification. Mortality was calculated estimating the population between the census of 1970, 1980 and 1990.
Results. The mortality in this period was 0.51 per 100,000. The age average was of 7.2 ± 5.8 years. Of the 34, 82.3% were males and 17.6% girls. Two of each three accidents happened between February to July; the higher pick of frequency happened from 12 and 13 p.m.
Conclusions. It is necessary to develop a preventive program in order to give information to the parents about the responsibility of foreseeing that these accidents happen, and to the doctors to be watchful when assisting these children because the lesions can be for abuse to the minor.
