ABSTRACT
It is very important the increasing prevalence of obesity in the childhood. The objectives of this study were to know the obesity prevalence in children between 5 and 8 years and the parents’ attitudes towards the nutritional condition of their children. The children have received a questionnaire to evaluate socio-economic aspects and the parents’ attitudes about obesity. In the 3,814 children that: were studied, the prevalence of obesity and overweight was higher at the A and B social class and at the private schools as compared with the public ones (p ‹ 0.005). The prevalence of overweight and obesity was 13.2% and 5.8%, respectively, and there was no difference by sex or age. For the parents attitude towards their children’s obesity, 8.3% of the overweight group and 20.5% of the obesity group have adopted measures such as physical activity and diet, without medical supervision. It is worth implementing health policies in the sense of highlighting the risks that are associated with obesity and trying to reduce the increasing rates of this entity.
