ABSTRACTSince 1999 we have used a classification of periodontal disease which required updating to adapt to current advances, for the first time they join the American Academy of Periodontology and the European Federation of Periodontics and decide to work a universal classification. Among the most prominent aspects are: the recategorization of periodontitis with the elimination of the adjectives of «aggressive» and «chronic»; the sum of stages and degrees, there is also a section for periodontal health as well as for diseases and peri-implant conditions. The result of this meeting between the two scientific organizations achieved a global classification system for periodontal and peri-implant diseases where now the current challenge of every health professional is to optimize the integral planning of the treatments as well as a personalized approach of attention to the patient. This document presents an abbreviated view of the classification.
