ABSTRACT

Review on smoking, with the objective of knowing their concept, demographic data, causal factors of risk and consequences, main measures of prevention.
A total of 48 bibliographies were revised, being concluded to the smoking like illness chronic, addictive, recurrent, high prevalence; factor of risk for a great number of illnesses, and cause of avoidable morbidity and mortality. Caused by personality, atmosphere and relatives' example, educators and smoking friends; changes at level molecular and telomeres and brain neurotransmitters, they determine beginning and addiction. It causes multiple illnesses of high disability and mortality, without distinguishing age, sex, neither social stratum. Inside the main preventive measures, the programs with multiple-integral components of control, cities healthy-atmospheres free of tobacco, campaigns in media, lawpolitical anti-smoking, school programs, with support of the level recommended by the Centers for the Control and the prevention of Illnesses. The Primary Attention of Health as a privileged position for this to work.
