Emotional conflicts of the children with attention deficit/ hyperactivity disorder

ABSTRACT

Data are presented for an investigation whose objective was to determine the main emotional conflicts of children with and without Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), since in addition to the high prevalence of the disorder, there are few studies that address the concomitant emotional aspects. Involving voluntarily 20 children both genders aged 7 to 11, as well as their mothers, assigned to 2 groups: with and without ADHD. The information was obtained from semi- structured interviews with the mother and the child considering the topics: development, history of the disorder, family composition, general living conditions, social interaction, affective exchanges, self-concept, schooling and information about the disorder. In the case of children, the Thematic Apperception Children Test (CAT) was also applied. Statistically significant differences were found, the group with ADHD reveal more conflicts, the most outstanding were rejection, instability in social relations with classmates, negative self-concept, difficulties in psychic organization, impulse control, school trouble, lack of family support, maternal dependence and trouble with the father figure. The control group shows no manifest sign of these conflicts, the important feature in these was the search for autonomy. It is concluded that children with ADHD suffer from more conflicts in the emotional sphere, factor to be considered for both diagnosis and treatment.
