ABSTRACT

Introduction: Obesity is a public health concern, it requires prevention, early diagnosis, comprehensive treatment, control and diminishing events. Normal weight obesity (NWO) is defined as normal Body Mass Index (BMI) associated to a High Body fat (BF) percentage, negative lipids and swelling profile increase. Objective: Refer to today’s knowledge state of the normal weight obesity syndrome in Mexico; conceptualize the disease, encouraging future research on the subject. Methods: Documental descriptive study, NWO literature review. Key phrases used: “Obesidad con Peso Normal” and Normal Weight Obesity on Academic Google search engine. Articles were analyzed using a double entry matrix, identifying relationships between objectives methodology, results and conclusions. Results Searches in Academic Google for Normal Weight Obesity generated 2,370 results, 0.55% (13) complied with inclusion criteria. “Obesidad de Peso Normal” searches in Academic Google resulted in 48,600 results, no academic articles in Spanish were found. Conclusions: obesity definition based on weight and height is challenged; BMI does not accurately identify associated cardiovascular risk. People with a normal BMI and high BF, present a higher risk of metabolic deregulation, systemic swelling and higher mortality rates.
