ABSTRACT

Introduction: arterial hypertension represents today a problem and a challenge for Public Health in all countries due to its high prevalence.
Objective: to determine the behavior of hypertensive crises in patients with high blood pressure dispensed from the family doctor´s office No. 30 from Hermanos Labrada polyclinic in the municipality of Manzanillo-Granma from December 2015 to December 2016.
Material and method: observational, descriptive and retrospective study. The universe of study was constituted by 157 patients older than 18 years; by using simple random probabilistic sampling, the sample consisted of 50 patients, who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The variables studied were age, sex, occupation, degree of arterial hypertension, risk factors, as well as type of hypertensive crisis. The data was collected through a data collection survey.
Results: patients 49-53 years of age (28 %), men (31.4 %), workers with hypertension grade II (52 %) predominated; alcohol intake and smoking were the predominant modifiable risk factors and affected hypertensive emergencies with 42.5 % and 27.5 %; respectively.
Conclusions: the prevalence of risk factors on hypertensive crises was determined in the Hermanos Labrada Polyclinic that would help in decision-making to improve the quality of life of these patients and in other similar clinical contexts.
