ABSTRACT

Objectives: To base the current components of a competency-based curriculum and its application in a health promotion module of the comprehensive general medicine residency program and the challenges arising from its implementation.
Development: the foundations and current components of a competency-based curriculum (competences, reliable professional activities and milestones or steps) are described and some examples of their application to a health promotion module of the comprehensive general medicine residency program are described. From the identification of competences in this field, from a critical analysis of the module and a conceptual analysis of the health promotion approach in family medicine previously identified by the author. The challenges that the adoption of this model implies are mentioned.
Conclusions: the application of a new model for the curricular redesign of a specific module of a residency program implies new challenges that include the sensitization of teachers and curriculum designers for their homogenous inclusion throughout the program and the overcoming of challenges imposed by the current local and international context not only in the conceptual, but also in the practical.
