ABSTRACT
Biphosphonates (BP) have been widely, efficiently, and safely used to treat osteoporosis, hypercalcemia, bone metastasis of solid malignant tumors, and Paget’s disease of the bone. However, a relationship has been reported between the use of bisphosphonates and Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (BRONJ).
Objective: To review cases of OMB in General Hospital No. 57, IMSS in a period from June 2010 to June 2015.
Results: It was found 8 patients with BRONJ. Of the patients studied 3 (37.5%) were male and 5 (62.5%) women with a mean age of 69 years. Taking about the diseases associated 75% (six patients) had an oncological disease, 50% breast cancer and the other 50% prostate cancer and finally the other 25% (two patients) was associated with osteoporosis.
Conclusions: Bisphosphonates are the ideal drugs to treat bone metastases and osteoporosis mainly, despite having adverse effects continue to be used as BRONJ so it is important the proper management of these patients. In stage I the ideal treatment is prolonged use of antibiotic therapy. Curettage of superficial injuries BRONJ appears to be the most effective treatment for patients who are in stage II and slightly deep curettage for patients with grade II and grade III severe light combined with long-term antibiotic therapy and use of mouthwashes.
