ABSTRACT

Body modifications including piercings, tattoos and subcutaneous implants have become increasingly popular worldwide. They represent a disruption of natural barriers and an elevated risk of infections (local and distant) such as Infective Endocarditis, predisposing the bloodstream to external organisms. This is a case report of a 35-year-old male with multiple body modifications and history of intravenous drug use, who associated Endocarditis of the Aortic valve, causing severe aortic regurgitation. A literature review is presented regarding the risk of Infective Endocarditis in association with piercings, tattoos and other body modification techniques.
