ABSTRACT
Objective: To report the current state of organ and tissue donation in a hospital in the city of Puebla, in Mexico. Material and methods: Cross-sectional study. An analysis of the donations performed from May 2016 to April 2017 in a hospital in Puebla is presented. We recorded age, gender, state of origin, causes of death, type of organ and tissue donated, home state, and the place occupied by the center regarding other organ donor centers. Descriptive statistics, measures of central tendency, dispersion and frequencies were used. Results: There were 32 donations, 71.9% of men and 28.1% of women; the average age of the donors was 45.88, (2-83) ± 19.81 years. Deaths were due to cardiac arrest (37.5%) and encephalic death (62.5%); 68.8% of the cases were native from Puebla. The main cause of hospitalization was falling from height, 25% in men and 12.5% in women. The most frequently donated tissues were corneas, 30 patients (93.75%), and kidneys, 19 (59.37%). Within the Mexican Social Security Institute, this hospital in Puebla takes the first place in donation for brain death of all trauma-orthopedic hospitals, and the third place of all hospitals; this unit occupies the fifth place in transplants of all public and private health institutions in Mexico. Conclusion: Donation was more common in men, the tissues and organs more frequently donated were corneas and kidneys; disseminating the program helps to achieve our objectives.REFERENCES
