ABSTRACT

The high morbidity, disability and mortality caused by cardiovascular diseases (CVD), makes its prevention a great challenge for the current Cuban public health.
Objective: to describe the plasma levels of the ApoB / ApoA1 ratio and its approach to cardiovascular risk, by sex, age groups and geographic areas of residence in the Cuban population from 35 to 74 years of age.
Method: cross-sectional descriptive study that used data from the III National Survey of Risk Factors of Non-Communicable Diseases, representative of the population aged 15 and over, by sex, age groups, in urban and rural areas of the country. Individuals with absence of previous cardiovascular events were included. The variables age, sex were used; geographical area of residence and apolipoprotein ratio ApoB / ApoA1, stratified in 3 levels. Absolute frequencies, percentages and 95% confidence intervals were calculated.
Results: the third part of the individuals classified as "high" risk, a category in which the females globally surpassed the men, 1.6 times more, without significant differences by geographic zones. By age groups, no differences in cardiovascular risk were observed.
Conclusions: The "high" level of cardiovascular risk identified in this population could be determined by the measurement instrument that has been used, which could be overestimating the real risk, if we compare it with other Cuban studies. Other studies are required that with the same measuring instrument allow to give consistency or adjust these results.
