ABSTRACT

Background: Depression is common in older adults, because changes and losses are comming trough the years, they suffer and decrease their perception on quality of life and health. Oral health has an esencial roll in the well being and quality of life, however oral problems are frequent in elderly. Objective: To evaluate depression, perception of oral health and quality of life. Material and methods: Associative and transversal study in 115 old adults, inside and outside of rest homes. Instruments to evaluate depression, oral health and quality of life were applide. Results: More than half of the sample not depressive symptoms; being lower in those who practice physical activity. Most of them use oral prosthesis, some have only aesthetic functions. Older adults have negative perception on oral health and regular on quality of life. There are not association between oral health and quality of life. Those found outside of rest homes have more positive perception on quality of life and oral health, than those inside, in all cases depressive people are most negative. Conclusion: Depression is a disability, impact on perception of quality of life and oral health of older adults, physical activity decrease it’s effects.
