ABSTRACT
Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the daily supply of fluoride intake in food and beverages for infants and kindergarden that are ingested in a daycare center of Mexico City.
Methods: Collection of foods and beverages consisted in 96 samples. The samples were prepared during one week by the duplicate diet technique. Samples were prepared to test for fluoride by the direct technique. Determinations were carried out using a combined ion-selective electrode.
Results: The results were calculated in micrograms per kilogram of body weight/day (µgF/kgpc/day) for infants whose body weight was 6.100 kg daily supply was 43.1; for those whose average weight was of 11.400 kg, it was 54.2 and, for children which average weight was of 24.500 kg it was 32.2.
Discussion: Teeth which clinical crowns are developing such as permanent anterior incisives, as well as permanent first molar on children less than one year whose body weight on average was 11.400 kg are at risk of fluorosis, dissimilar to the other children’s teeth. It might be concluded that more research about fluoride content in food and risk groups for fluorosis are needed.
