ABSTRACT

Objective: To know what the prevalence and incidence of influenza in pregnant women have been in the last three years (2014, 2015 and 2016) in the State of Mexico. Material y methods: The annual concentrates of the platform in which positives for some type of virus were reported during the above-mentioned periods were reviewed. Results: We observed low prevalences in the three years, both globally (× 1,000 people) and for sex (× 100 women), since in 2014 they were 3.57 and 0.69; in 2015, 1.05 and 1.39, and in 2016, 4.65 and 0.90, respectively. Likewise, the incidence rate of being pregnant and getting sick with influenza was low in the three years: (2014) 0.23, (2015) 0.15 and (2016) 0.33 cases/person per year. Of the total of pregnant women, 164, the number of those vaccinated against influenza was low, only 45 (27.4)%; it seems there was a better attachment to vaccination in 2014, with 22 (30.5%) of 72 pregnant women, which corresponded to 48.8% of the 45 who were vaccinated in the three years. The range of age was 17 to 73 years, with a media of 32 years and a median of 31 years. Analysis: The relation between pregnant women attended on an outpatient basis and those hospitalized was of 1:1.4 respectively, corresponding to 115 inpatients (70.2%) versus 49 in outpatient care (29.8%). In spite of the low predominance and incidence, the risk or probability of becoming ill if someone was pregnant versus if not was significant in the three years: in 2014 it was 1.6; in 2015, 2.7 more times, and in 2016 there was a 1.9 times greater probability. Conclusions: The number of vaccinated pregnant women was very low, which could have contributed to the biggest index of internments or hospital admissions as there was no protection against influenza.
