ABSTRACT

The number of dentists in Mexico increased significantly in the 70´s. Nevertheless opportunities for employment became more difficult. The present study was intended to obtain perspectives about opinions of the dental profession in Mexico City, about their economical situation in relation to the last five years of practice. Data was compared with studies performed by the same authors in 1982, 1992 and the year 2000. The data referred to their incomes and standards of personal life. Results showed that for most of them, economical situation was reduced, and quality of life diminished. Experienced dentists were less affected than those who incorporated to dental practice more recently. Higher social stratum of dentists was less affected. Female dentists were more impacted than male, although in their opinions they did not feel to be more affected. As a whole, differences were minimal. The economical situation of dentists was considered to be related to the general economical situation of the whole country. It is recommended to studies of this type that actually are almost inexistent in carry-on Mexico. Options should be seek out in order to expand and dignify frontiers of dental practice.
