In vitro comparison of the effectiveness on antibiotics against facultative anaerobic bacteria isolated from infected root canals

ABSTRACT
The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness of antibiotics against facultative anaerobic bacteria isolated from patients with infected root canals. Bacteria were identified by the API-STAPH, API-20E, API 20 NE and API Candida systems. Minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of penicillin, ampicillin, amoxicillin, ceftazidime, oxytetracycline, clindamycin, cefotaxime and ampicillin plus sulbactam were determined by plate dilution. Forty two facultative anaerobic microorganisms were identified. All Grampositive bacteria were resistant to penicillin (MIC
90 =143.85 µg/mL), ampicillin (MIC
90 = 58.45 µg/mL), and clindamycin (MIC
90 = 225 µg/mL), but sensitive to cefotaxime (MIC
90 = 1.71 µg/mL) and to ampicillin plus sulbactam (MIC
90 = 1.62 µg/mL). One hundred percent Gramnegative bacteria were resistant to penicillin (MIC
90 = 225 µg/mL), ampicillin (MIC
90 = 67.94 µg/mL), amoxicillin (MIC
90 = 225 µg/mL), oxytetracycline (MIC
90 = 28.11 µg/mL) and clindamicyn (MIC
90 = 225 µg/mL), but sensitive to cefotaxime (MIC
90 = 1.79 µg/mL) and to ampicillin plus sulbactam (MIC
90 = 1.83 µg/mL). These results showed that cefotaxime and the combination ampicillin plus sulbactam represent a good choice for treatment of root canals bacterial infections.
