ABSTRACT

Introduction: Prosopis pallida is a tree that grows mainly in northern Peru and southern Ecuador. The components of its leaves (flavonoids and tannins) are attributed potential antimicrobial effects. Enterococcus faecalis is a gram-positive facultative anaerobic coccus bacterium of interest to researchers because it is a frequent cause of root canal infection in teeth with failed endodontic treatment.
Objective: evaluate the antibacterial activity of an alcoholic extract ofProsopis pallida (algarrobo) leaves against Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212.
Methods: total extract of P. pallida was obtained by the method of solvent extraction. The solvent used was 80 % ethanol. In vitro antibacterial activity of the extract was evaluated by the methods of disc diffusion and microdilution. Concentration of the extract ranged from 10 to 90 mg/mL. The positive control was 2 % chlorhexidine gluconate, whereas the negative control was sterile physiological saline.
Results: the highest inhibition was obtained at concentrations of 80 and 90 mg/mL, with inhibition haloes of 16 mm in diameter. The positive control achieved an inhibition halo of 16.9 mm. The negative control did not produce any inhibition. Minimum inhibitory concentration and minimum bactericidal concentration by the microdilution method were < 10 mg/mL.
Conclusions: the ethanolic extract of Prosopis pallida has antibacterial activity in vitro against Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212, but its action is not significant with respect to the positive control (p> 0.05).
