ABSTRACT

Diabetes mellitus is a condition known for centuries; however, at the end of the millennium the knowledge of its etiology, natural history and epidemiology is still incomplete. Epidemiological studies on this disease and specifically on type 1 have had a major impact in the international scientific community.
