ABSTRACT

Breast cancer is one of the most common worldwide, accounting for 25% of all cancers. Lymphedema is a chronic disease of the lymphatic system characterized by fluid accumulation with a high amount of protein in the interstitial space. In developed countries the main cause is lymphadenectomy and radiation in relation to cancer treatment. It is estimated that 40% of mastectomized women suffer from lymphedema in the upper limb. Lymphedema after treatment of breast cancer can occur immediately or up to 30 years later, on average it can start at 8 months and 80% within the first 3 years. Before defining any type of treatment it is important to make a detailed assessment of the patient. The most common treatment modality is Complete Descongestive Therapy. Overweight and obesity, in addition to being a postmenopausal risk factor for the development of breast cancer, also represents a risk factor for the development of lymphedema, so that physical activity and a proper diet trying to maintain weight as much as possible close to the ideal should be part of the comprehensive management of the patient with breast cancer. A series of recommendations for the management of patients with breast cancer is presented, in order to be used in the comprehensive assessment.
