ABSTRACT

Introduction: Diabetes mellitus is an important global health problem to which Cuba is not oblivious and it is estimated that it will be the seventh cause of death for the year 2030.
Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of an educational intervention on diabetes mellitus in diabetic patients belonging to a medical office in a Guantánamo municipality during 2015.
Materials and Methods: An experimental non-observational study of educational intervention was carried out, the universe it consisted of 116 patients, of which 40 were selected, through a non-probabilistic sampling.
Results: It was found that the age of greatest prevalence of diabetic patients was between 65 and 69 years old with 35%. Regarding the knowledge about risk factors, a notable increase is observed in patients with good knowledge (7,5 %-75 %), in the same way it happens with the knowledge of symptoms and signs (10 %-62,5 %); complications (2,5 %-67.5%) and prevention (17,5 %-82,5 %).
Conclusions: In general, it was possible for diabetic patients to increase their level of knowledge about the risk factors, symptoms and signs, complications and prevention of diabetes mellitus.
