ABSTRACT
The global trend has made henna tattoos popular, because it’s
painless, decorative and not permanent with a maximum duration
of three weeks. The black henna is composed by red henna
and other substances, mainly paraphenylenediamine. According
to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), black henna
was in the top five more powerful sensitizers, also designated
“Allergen of the year” by the American Contact Dermatitis Society
in the 2006. We report the case of a 22-year-old female
who developed a contact dermatitis due to a henna tattoo. The
pathogenic mechanism in contact dermatitis has two variants,
one due to irritants and another one from allergens. A brief
review of these mechanisms is presented.
