ABSTRACT

Introduction: Professional values are human values contextualized and directed towards the profession, constituting qualities of the professional's personality. These values express social meanings of human connotation and in constant bond with the professional work and modes of action, hence these values take part in the regulation of behavior.
Objective: Characterize the professional values that are significant for their performance, which were declared by medical students who took Psychology.
Methods: A cross-sectional, observational and descriptive study was carried out. A qualitative research methodology is assumed. Psychodiagnostic techniques were applied to 77 students of the class of Medical Psychology, in 2015.
Results: The professional values declared as important for professional performance were honesty, professionalism, responsibility, social commitment and solidarity, according to the hierarchical order manifested. The contents that define these values are expressed with a positive affective bond and an average personal elaboration, but their knowledge is average-low.
Conclusion: There is a set of professional values with which university students are identified. They know their content and that they are elaborated with personal sense, but they lack personalization for more effective regulation of professional behavior.
