ABSTRACT

Introduction: Thrombosis of valvular prostheses is a major complication both at the early and late postoperative periods of valvular replacement. It is responsible for 90 % of prosthetic valve obstructions.
Objective: To characterize patients with prosthetic thrombosis in the cardiology service.
Methods: A descriptive, longitudinal, retrospective study was performed in 7 patients with prosthetic valve thrombosis who were admitted to the cardiology ward at “Celia Sanchez Manduley” Hospital in Manzanillo, Granma from January 2011 to January 2016. The variables studied were age, sex, position of the prosthesis, symptoms and signs, anticoagulation and thrombolytic treatment result. Absolute frequency and relative frequency were used as a summary measure.
Results: Female sex (85.7 %) and patients aged 30 and over predominated in this study. Thrombosis in the mitral valve, palpitation and tachycardia occurred in all patients. Anticoagulation was inadequate in 71.4 % of patients. All patients were treated with streptokinase, achieving resolution of thrombosis in 85.7 % of patients.
Conclusion: The majority of patients were poorly anticoagulated. Thrombolysis with streptokinase was an effective alternative in the treatment of thrombotic obstruction.
