ABSTRACT
Introduction: Mechanical ventilation is one of the most important challenges intensivist physicians face today, especially due to prolongation in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, often associating pneumonia. Objective: To demonstrate the impact of performing early tracheostomy in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Methods: A longitudinal retrospective observational study was performed from January 2010 to January of 2015 in 211 patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of “Miguel Enríquez” Hospital, with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and who underwent tracheostomy. The variables analyzed were mortality, intensive care unit stay, duration of mechanical ventilation, and the appearance of ventilator-associated pneumonia. Means, non-parametric X2 test and binary logistic regression for data analysis were used.
Results: The early performance of tracheostomy in ventilated patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease decreased mortality, the stay in the intensive care unit, the duration of mechanical ventilation and reduced the occurrence of pneumonia associated with ventilation.
Conclusions: Early tracheostomy was an effective procedure for patients with chronic obstructive disease undergoing mechanical ventilators.
