ABSTRACT

Mycoplama genitalium belongs along with other mycoplasmas and ureaplasmas, to the family Mycoplasmataceae, class Mollicutes. They are widely distributed in humans, mammals, birds, reptiles, fish and other vertebrates, as well as in plants. Genital mycoplasmas represent a complex group of microorganisms that have been associated with a wide range of infectious diseases in adults and children. Most of the research has focused on male patients with urethritis, but M. genitalium has been implicated in pelvic inflammatory disease, pneumonia, arthritis and complications of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome. The mode of infection of diseases caused by M. genitalium is sexual transmission; these diseases often appear to be asymptomatic and chronic. M. genitalium may be associated with women and men who have sex with same-sex couples, bisexual couples and heterosexuals acquire it through the contagion of a couple who has had bisexual relationships.
