ABSTRACT

The number of scientific investigations about mindfulness has grown exponentially in recent years. The methodologies used and the evidence about the benefits that mindfulness training can bring to the health of the subjects are diverse. Among the main components demonstrated are emotional self-regulation, stress, anxiety, and chronic pain symptoms reduction, and prevention of relapses of depression. On the other hand, the research in mindfulness must evolve some fundamental aspects that are not yet fully developed in the field, namely: the emphasis on the impact of mindfulness- based interventions on the quality of life; the “second person” perspective; and the in-depth study of the unexpected effects of these interventions. Thus, the goal of this commentary- article is to add and discuss those aspects from the scientific and clinical experience of the authors (“science and art”). Our main challenge is to provoke a broader reflection on the future of the science and art of mindfulness.
