ABSTRACT

One of the international goals for patient safety proposed by the World Health Organization (WHO) is to "increase effective communication". In this essay we will discuss: the effective communication between the radiologist and the patients, the elements of the adequate doctor-patient relationship and its history through the paternalistic, autonomous and bureaucratic eras. The current role of the radiologist in patient care and the different perceptions of the radiologist in terms of communication with the patient will also be discussed. Finally, the proposals of international organizations are reviewed to create a "radiology focused on the patient".
